2011 Umpire Merchandise Products of the Year (U.M.P.Y. Awards)

2011 was an interesting year that was marked by development and umpire comfort. Several products were introduced that will have a lasting impact on how umpires work their games. RiteTemp Athletics, an HTFx Company, introduced a cooling pad for umpires to wear under a chest protector. All Star Sports developed new pro-style leg guards and a chest protector that are receiving great reviews. And Majestic Athletics gave us an umpire cold weather coat. These and more innovative products made this year’s products exciting and interesting. It also made for some difficult decisions when selecting the winners for the 2011 Umpire Merchandise Products of the Year (U.M.P.Y. Awards).

This year’s winners are:
·                    Traditional Mask: Wilson Titanium WTA3009BLTI (Standard Profile)
·                    Helmet: All-Star System Seven MVP4000
·                    Chest Protector: All Star CPU4000
·                    Leg Guards: All Star LGU2000
·                    Umpire Accessory: Majestic Therma Base Umpire Jacket
·                    Shirt: Ump-Attire Ultimate Umpire Shirt
·                    Pants: Honig's Polywool Umpire Pants
·                    Shoe: Reebok Field Magistrate Plate Shoe
·                    Training Aid: Umpire-Empire.com

And the Midwest-Ump UMPY Product of the Year:
Majestic Therma Base Umpire Jacket

Congratulations to all the 2011 winners!

Traditional Mask: Wilson Titanium (WTA3009BLTI) [Standard Profile]
The Wilson Titanium (WTA3009BLTI) is not a new product. When it was featured on Midwest Ump in 2010, its review was less than glowing. The Wilson Titanium did not undergo any significant change during 2011. Why, then, is it now named Traditional Mask Product of the Year?

The Wilson Titanium has sex appeal.

Why do many prominent amateur and professional umpires choose the Wilson Titanium mask? At 23 ounces, the Wilson TI is not the lightest mask on the market (but certainly not heavy!). It is not indestructible. It is also very pricing at around $200. Some things you can’t fully explain - like why tweeners swoon at Justin Bieber’s haircut.

The Wilson A3009BLTI is made from single bar titanium, a strong and exotic material. Wilson lowered the profile of this mask and narrowed its width. The result is an excellent fit for most umpires. In addition, Wilson uses very thin 5mm single bars for superior visibility. The Wilson TI also comes with high quality leather pads. Maybe it is the combination of high quality materials and considerable price tag that is draws umpires to this mask? Whatever it is, the Wilson Titanium (WTA3009BLTI) is a “usual suspect” at Division I and professional baseball contests. Its popularity and quality makes it this year’s Midwest U.M.P.Y. winner for Traditional Mask.

Helmet: All-Star System Seven MVP4000
With no major changes, and no serious competition, there is no question that the All Star System Seven Umpire Helmet would repeat as this year’s winner in the Helmet category. It is designed for upper level baseball and rated for speeds over 100MPH.

The All Star MVP4000 weighs just over 40 ounces, and is engineered to distribute its weight evenly, so it feels much lighter. Replacing the moisture wicking pads inside the helmet is easy, so you can swap out wet pads for dry pads. The pads are machine washable. The helmet is made with a polycarbonate shell, and the cage is available in steel or titanium. Take a look at All Star's testing video below:

Chest Protector: All Star CPU4000
Some readers complain that a newly introduced product should not be considered for the UMPY Awards, especially when the product is made available after the “end of the season.” When exactly is that? In September? October? November? Some parts of the U.S. play year-round and I don’t even need to mention the southern hemisphere.

All-Star introduced its System Seven CPU4000 chest protector late in 2011, but it has already made a big impact. Many call it reminiscent of the Douglas chest protector. What is clear is it is the best new chest protector design we have seen in years.

The CPU4000 contains some innovative design features including a center channel between the umpire and the chest protector for improved air circulation. It is also impressive in its weight distribution. This protector actually weighs more than any other hard shell chest protector Midwest Ump has tested, but the fit of the CPU4000 makes it actually feel lighter than most. This is due to how the chest protector rests on the shoulders, rather than hanging from the neck and shoulders.

Midwest Ump had high praise for the All Star System Seven CPU4000 chest protector during its review. It is the 2011 UMPY Award Winner for Chest Protector.

Leg Guards: All Star LGU2000
The All Star LGU2000 Leg Guards are not light, are a bit bulky, and are expensive. Why, then, are they a 2011 UMPY Award Winner?  They are OMG comfortable! With the LGU2000, you get the best of both worlds: comfort and protection.

Removable and washable pads line the interior of the LGU2000. Air vents help with circulation, and the "Patella Plus" pads are a unique design. The pad configuration cradles the knee and gives it some support. Top this off with All Star’s highly praised Delta Flex harness, and the LGU2000 are a clear winner.

Shirt: Ump-Attire Ultimate
During 2011, Honig’s introduced a new umpire shirt. It is breathable, comfortable, and looks great. The material is a closed-hole polyester that wicks away moisture. It is an excellent umpire shirt, so why isn’t it the 2011 UMPY Shirt of the year?

Because it is nearly identical to the Ump-Attire Ultimate Umpire shirt, winner of the Shirt of the year category since 2009, and top prated shirt in the Midwest Ump shirt comparison! The Ultimate sets the standard in umpire shirts, and other manufacturers are catching on. The Ultimate Umpire Shirt is wrinkle resistant, resists pricking and pilling (important when you wear a chest protector underneath), and is light-weight and breathable. It is also made in the U.S.A., an unusual feature these days. I can personally attest to the durability of these shirts. My Ump-Attire Ultimate Umpire Shirts have seen three seasons and still look new!

Others may imitate, but until Ump-Attire’s competitors produce a better product, the Ump-Attire Ultimate Umpire Shirt wins the UMPY for Shirt of the Year.

Pants: Honig's Polywools
Honig’s Polywools were the 2010 Umpire Product of the Year. They are an umpiring standard. If you want to match your partner in a great fitting and durable pair of high quality pants, then this purchase is a “no-brainer.” If you don’t care about these things, then let me introduce you to slow pitch softball and a nice pair of shorts. . .

No other pants on the market are in the class of the Honig’s Polywool pants. Modeled after the polywools used by MLB umpires, the Honig’s polywools are manufactured at the same plant – Hardwick Clothes in Cleveland, TN. Tough, durable, and good-looking, the Honig’s Polywools are the indisputable winner of the UMPY Award for the Pants of the Year.

Shoe: Reebok Field Magistrate Plate Shoe
Contrary to some opinion, the UMPY shoe category is not limited to plate shoes. Midwest Ump looks at new umpire specific shoes as well as general athletic shoes that may be used as umpire footwear. The author’s personal shoe of choice on the field is a Reebok Quag NFL Referee shoe.

We all want shoes that are safe and reliable, comfortable, and good looking, but these qualities are largely personal preference and vary from person to person. Selecting a shoe for an UMPY Award is therefore even more subjective than any other category.

For plate shoes, some umpires like New Balance, some Nautilus, and some like Spot Bilt. However, one shoe has consistently received higher praise than any other since it was introduced: the Reebok Field Magistrate Plate Shoe. Named UMPY Winner in 2009 and 2010, the Reebok Field Magistrate Plate Shoe remains relatively unchanged.

The Field Magistrate is available in mid and low cuts, and comes in white stripes, or all black for the low cut version. The comfortable interior, substantial metatarsal plate and steel toe box are winning features in this shoe.

Next year New Balance is introducing the MU460MBK plate shoe which promises to be very comfortable and protective. New Balance obtained the MLB umpire shoe contract this year, so the MU460MBK showed up on the field. Midwest Ump looks forward to reviewing this new plate shoe, but this year’s UMPY Award Winner, for the third year in a row is the Reebok Field Magistrate Plate Shoe.

Training Aid: Umpire-Empire.com
Umpire forums have been around since the early days of the internet. Umpires would converse on the Usenet Newsgroups, like rec.sport.officiating (created in 1996), and alt.sport.officiating (formed in 1993). To put things in perspective, umpires were posting on message boards at least three years before Google was created as a research project, and one year before the advent of "David and Jerry's Guide to the World Wide Web,” later renamed “Yahoo!

By 2007, every umpire and his grandfather had access to the internet. Resources for amateur umpires existed, like the Amateur BaseballUmpires Association web site and forum, officiating.com, and the NFHS on-lineforum, now found on the Arbiter Sports site (seven threads as of this writing). Unfortunately, often the discussions degenerated into angry and disrespectful words.

On January 1, 2008, Umpire-Empire.com went on-line. It wasn’t much at first. But Warren Workman’s little project soon found a voice – a more calm and civil voice. It attracted more reasonable discussions on its boards and gained popularity because of it. Today Umpire-Empire is not only the most popular on-line umpire forum, it is also the best. Its technology has been upgraded several times since its inception, the forums are easily navigable, and the discussions are interesting.

Forums always attract the Cliff Clavin know-it-all type. Sometimes the Cliff-ies post information that is outdated, misses the point, or is just plain wrong. However, the more activity that occurs, the more likely the correct answer will (eventually) appear. That is what happens on the Umpire-Empire site. Whether it is a rules or mechanics question, an analysis of a controversial MLB umpire decision, or a discussion of umpire equipment (Midwest Ump’s personal favorite), the conversation at Umpire-Empire is always informative. Rookies and veterans discuss umpire issues without condescension or ridicule. This environment makes Umpire-Empire a great place to ask questions and learn the craft of umpiring.

Likewise, umpire equipment manufacturers and retailers have discovered Umpire-Empire as a resource to gauge interests and obtain feedback about what is important to amateur umpires. This year we witnessed All Star using umpires from the Umpire-Empire site to test new products and provide feedback.

Is Umpire-Empire the “best” training aid? For the new umpire, Umpire-Empire is an invaluable resource. For the veteran, it is a great forum to share ideas. Because of its important benefits to the umpire community, Umpire-Empire is the 2011 UMPY Award Winner in the Training Aid category.

Umpire Accessory: Majestic Therma Base Jacket
Midwest-Ump Umpire Product of the Year
Early on it was clear that the Midwest Ump Umpire Product of the Year would come from the Umpire Accessory category. The finalists in this category are spectacular and are all deserving to win Umpire Accessory of the Year:

·  RiteTemp Cooling Pads
·  Team Wendy mask pads
·  All Star Delta Flex harness
·  Majestic Therma Base Umpire Jacket

The UMPY Awards were conceived as a way to identify the best products in nine important individual categories. The “Product of the Year” essentially is a superior piece of equipment that distinguishes itself as essential or innovative. This year each finalist brought something new and interesting to the discussion, but one was the clear choice.

For the second year in a row, a clothing item has been chosen as the UMPY Product of the Year. Can you imagine how difficult this decision must have been?

Not really.

The Majestic Therma Base Umpire Jacket is revolutionary. It is a fleece coat that is warm and comfortable when the temperatures are inhospitable. Many umpires must contend with inclement cold weather in the early season, so the Majestic Therma Base Jacket is a godsend. If your mother was dressing you for a cold weather umpire assignment, she would select the Majestic Therma Base Umpire Jacket to keep you warm and dry.

Cut to fit a chest protector, the Therma Base does not restrict your movements when you have the stick. While retailers and the manufacturer advise sizing down for base work (buy two!), many of us use the same jacket for plate and bases. It is water resistant and the fleece lining keeps you warm in snow, sleet, or freezing rain.

The UMPY Product of the Year is meant to honor the piece of gear that makes life better or safer or easier for the umpire. The Majestic Therma Base Umpire Jacket makes life bearable during the early season. It is the 2011 UMPY Product of the Year.

Final Word
This year we are fortunate that we can recognize products that are helping the umpire work safer and better. Midwest Ump remains a strong supporter of manufacturers that are innovative and responsive to the safety and comfort of umpires. This year’s Award Winners do exactly that – they work to provide excellent products that umpires need and want.

Many new and exciting products are promised for next year, including the New Balance MU460MBK and Ump-Attire’s new polywool umpire pants promised to debut in early 2012. If next year is as interesting as this year, Midwest Ump will have many reviews and opinions to share. To umpires everywhere, Midwest Ump wishes health to you and your family in 2012, and “Don’t Suck!”

Honig's Pants Stand the Test of Time

On the left is a brand new pair of Honig's poly wool base pants. On the right is a pair of Honig's poly wool base pants purchased in October, 2009 and washed and dried 100+ times. I wash these pants in cold water on gentle cycle. I use regular detergent. They are dried on permanent press for 20 minutes (they dry quickly). Usually the poly wools are thrown into the washer and dryer with my umpire shirt, socks, compression shorts, etc.

These pants are outstanding and well-deserving of the 2010 U.M.P.Y. award for best pants and also the 2010 Midwest Ump Product of the Year award.

2010 UMPY Award Winners

Midwest Ump is pleased to announce the recipients of the second annual Umpire Merchandise Products of the Year (U.M.P.Y.) Awards. The UMPY Awards are given annually for the best umpire equipment, apparel, and training aids as selected by Midwest Ump, an umpire equipment, apparel, and training review site. Selections are determined by the reputation of the product in the umpire community, and by Midwest Ump testing and review.

This year's UMPY Award Winners and their respective categories are:
  • Traditional Mask - Diamond DFM-iX3 UMP umpire face mask in silver
  • Helmet- All-Star System 7 umpire helmet
  • Chest Protector - Wilson West Vest Gold Umpire Chest Protector (A3210)
  • Leg Guards- Champro Pro Plus Umpire Leg Guard
  • Accessory- Diamond Deluxe Pro Umpire Equipment Gear Bag (WHL DLX UMP 36 BAG)
  • Shirt- Ump-Attire Ultimate Umpire Shirt
  • Pants - Honig's Poly Wool Umpire Pants
  • Shoe - Reebok Field Magistrate Plate Shoe
  • Training Aid- Jim Evans Maximizing the Two Umpire System
The 2010 Product of the Year is awarded to Honig's Poly-Wool Umpire Pants

Traditional Mask
Winner: Diamond DFM-iX3 UMP in silver
Full Midwest Ump Review

The Diamond DFM-iX3 UMP umpire mask narrowly missed winning the Traditional Mask of the Year in 2009 when it lost out to the Champro Magnesium. This year, it was impossible to ignore its popularity. Umpires around the country are unanimous in their praise of the Diamond.

Made of aircraft aluminum, the Diamond cage weighs 12 ounces, which is 2 ounces heavier than the Champro cage. Right out of the box, the Diamond weighs 17 ounces with quick-dry pads and harness.

The Diamond DFM-iX3 UMP in silver has a rougher finish than its competitors. Its weight is also slightly heavier. It comes with quick-dry pads that are universally hated. So how did the Diamond take three strikes and still manage to win an UMPY for Traditional Mask of the Year?

First, the price is terrific. This mask is available through Amazon for $64.14 with free shipping. That is $10-20 cheaper than the Champro Magnesium and around $100 cheaper than any Titanium mask.

Second, this mask is building a reputation for being indestructible.

Third, it is amazingly popular. It shows up everywhere! The Diamond DFM-iX3 UMP in silver is highly recognizable as its finish is different than any titanium mask. Umpires at all levels use this mask and replace the standard pads with a variety of leather upgrades.

While there may be better masks available on the market, none can compete with the price, weight, appearance, and popularity of the Diamond DFM-iX3 UMP in silver. It is the 2010 Traditional Mask of the Year.

Helmet
Winner: All-Star System 7 Umpire Helmet

While many amateur catchers are required to wear helmets, and many pro catchers are choosing to wear hockey style helmets, most MLB umpires have resisted the hockey style helmet in favor of the traditional mask. This despite the obvious safety advantages that a helmet affords, including protection from side impacts.

All-Star Sports was the first to introduce the hockey style helmet to Major League Baseball. Designed in conjunction with Blue Jays catcher Charlie O'Brien, the hockey style helmet has been a major feature of the All-Star line-up for years. The System 7 is All-Star's most recent advancement in the process of perfecting the protective helmet.

The System 7 helmet has redesigned its cage to deflect direct impacts and uses a Vinyl Nitrile forehead band to provide extra protection. This helmet is specifically engineered for use at the highest levels and speeds exceeding 100MPH. The helmet has been reconfigured to apportion weight differently making the helmet feel lighter. This helmet is currently being worn by four Major League umpires (Ed Hickox, Bill Welke, Mike Dimuro, and CB Bucknor).

The System 7 is available in steel and titanium cages. The steel cage model is sold for $219.99 by Ump-Attire.

Chest Protector
Winner: Wilson West Vest Gold Chest Protector
Midwest Ump Review

Last year the selection process for Chest Protector of the Year came down to a choice between the Wilson West Vest Gold and the Wilson West Vest Platinum. In another close decision the Wilson Platinum was chosen best protector.

Well, another year has passed and not much has changed. The Wilson Gold and Wilson Platinum are still the best two umpire chest protectors available.

This year Midwest Ump has chosen to name the Wilson Gold as the 2010 UMPY for Best Chest Protector. Why the Gold when there have been no substantial changes for 2010?

Well, the Gold is available in three sizes that provide a more custom fit. Any owner of a Wilson Platinum can attest that it takes some time for the Platinum to conform to your body. The Gold fits right out of the box and has less slippage than the Platinum.

Both the Gold and Platinum offer superior protection. The padding of the Gold is more substantial than the Platinum, but the fit is actually tighter and the resulting appearance for both protectors is similar. The Gold is a little more expensive than the Platinum: Epic Sports sells the Gold for $133.99, versus a Platinum at Ump Attire for $124.99 (limited time).

So what is the choice: Mantle or Mays? This year we are going for the Gold.

Leg Guards
Winner: Champro Pro-Plus Umpire Leg Guards
Midwest Ump Review

Like dad always said, "There's the girl you date, and there's the girl you marry. . ."

In January Midwest Ump conducted a Low Profile Leg Guard Comparison. The winner of five different low profile leg guards was the 15" Diamond DLG-LITE Featherweight Shin Guards. While these light weight, low profile guards are excellent for high school, and adequate for most lower college games, they simply do not afford the full protection of professional equipment.

Major League Baseball endorses two shin guards: the Wilson West Vest Pro Umpire Shin Guards, which run around $100, and the Wilson Charcoal Umpire Shin Guards, which cost around $80. Both of these guards offer superior protection. However, both are very bulky and visible under plate pants.

Somewhere between the body armor protection of the Wilson professional guards and the light weight comfort of the Diamond resides the Champro Pro-Plus Umpire Leg Guards. The Champro guards are thoughtfully designed. Features like triple knee, extended thigh protection, moisture wick lining, ventilation slits, metal J-hooks, no strap behind the knee, and extended plastic plates around the ankle make this leg guard a winner.

The Pro-Plus Leg guards are available in three sizes: 15.5", 17" and 18.5", and are offered at half the price of the Wilson leg guards: Epic Sports for $41.89. Great protection, great comfort, and great price. Take dad's advice: she's a keeper!

Accessory
Winner: Diamond Deluxe Pro Umpire Equipment Gear Bag
Midwest Ump Review

Accessories are not glamorous or cool. Umpires do not talk about plate brushes or indicators (unless some rookie's cheap plastic indicator explodes when he flips it at the plate meeting!). But accessories make our job as umpires easier. This year's UMPY Award Winner for Umpire Accessory is the Diamond Deluxe Pro Umpire Equipment Gear Bag (WHL DLX UMP 36 BAG).

Like all UMPY Award winners, the Diamond Gear Bag is thoughtfully constructed. It features heavyweight polyester fabric, the zippers are very substantial, and the wheels on this bag glide smoothly. Eight small compartments store accessories while a separate shoe compartment, a main storage for apparel, and a second compartment for gear means that you can store all of your umpire equipment and clothing in one place.

Everything has a home in this bag. This is equally important for the umpire that travels to a big stadium, as well as the umpire that changes out of his or her car. The Diamond Deluxe Pro Umpire Equipment Gear Bag is an essential piece of equipment that makes the job of umpiring easier.

Shirt
Winner: Ump-Attire Ultimate Umpire Shirt
Midwest Ump Review

The Ump-Attire Ultimate Umpire Shirt is one of three repeat winners in this year's awards. The Ultimate was the top rated shirt in the 2009 Midwest Ump Umpire Shirt Comparison Review, winner of the 2009 UMPY for Best Shirt, and is the 2010 UMPY Award Winner for Best Shirt.

During the 2009 comparison, the Ultimate was tested in seven different categories (weight, breath-ability, construction, value, appearance, prick test, and wrinkle test) against six other shirts (The Official's Choice, Honig's, Cliff Keen Smitty Apparel, Dalco, Gerry Davis). The Ump-Attire Ultimate Umpire Shirt scored best in the wrinkle test, second in appearance and the prick test, and first overall in points. Since that time Midwest Ump has reviewed the MLB Majestic shirt and inspected new shirts from Smitty and Honig's. The Ultimate is still, well, the ultimate umpire shirt.

The Ultimate has been tested in actual games during the 2009 and 2010 season and continues to perform very well. As stated in last year's UMPY Awards review, "Its durability is directly attributed to its quality construction." The Ump-Attire Ultimate Umpire Shirt is available through Ump-Attire for $32.99.

Shoe
Winner: Reebok Field Magistrate Plate Shoe
Midwest Ump Review

The second repeat winner in this year's UMPY Awards is a definite fan favorite: the Reebok Field Magistrate Plate Shoe.

Since its introduction umpires have been leaving their old favorites behind for this comfortable plate shoe. The Field Magistrate provides excellent ankle support and shin guards can fit comfortably over the tongue of the mid cut shoe (also available in low cut). The moisture wicking Play Dry lining is very soft, the shoe is lighter than its competitors, and features a turf sole for greater traction.

Training Aid
Winner: Jim Evans Maximizing the Two Umpire System
Midwest Ump Review

The Midwest Ump review of the Jim Evans manual Maximizing the Two Umpire System was glowing. It gushed with praise. This book is that good.

Learning the two umpire system is the bedrock for all umpire systems. Umpiring in this system takes skill. Mastering this system takes a lifetime. Jim Evans gives the earnest umpire the tools for learning the mechanics of the two man system. This book systematically deconstructs the two man system and examines the proper form and function of each umpire for any possible play.

If you are serious about getting better, buy Maximizing the Two Umpire System and study it! Available at Jim Evans Academy of Professional Umpiring for $69.95.

Pants
Winner: Honig's Poly Wool Pants
Winner: 2010 Umpire Merchandise Product of the Year
Midwest Ump Review

Midwest Ump has nicknamed the Honig's Poly Wool pants, the "Cadillac of Pants." Modeled after the poly wool blend pants worn by Major League umpires made by Hardwick Clothes in Cleveland., Tennessee, the Honig's Poly Wools look great and are tough as nails.

The Honig's Poly Wools won the Best Umpire Pants category in 2009, and there is no other umpire pants remotely close in terms of quality, appearance, and durability. Constructed from a heavyweight polyester and wool blend, the Poly Wools feature a reinforced knee, saddle stitching, and a "Snug-fit" waistband to keep your shirt tucked.

After hundreds of games the field-tested Honig's Poly Wool pants have retained their look and quality. Although against the manufacturer's recommendation, these pants were never dry cleaned and were washed in cold water, gentle cycle and tossed into a dryer under low heat.

Honig's Poly Wool Pants are sold exclusively by Honig's for $73.95 (base pants) and $79.95 (plate pants), and are only offered in charcoal grey. They are, without a doubt, the best of the best, and Midwest Ump is pleased to award the Honig's Poly Wool Umpire Pants the titles of Umpire Pants of the Year and 2010 UMPY Product of the Year.

Final Word
The status quo didn't change a great deal during 2010. Many of this year's UMPY Award winners were not new or changed products. Instead the winners tended to be selected from products that were time-tested. Typical of the field is the Diamond DFM- iX3 UMP in silver. The Diamond won its category by being popular, durable, and a good value (in this economy an important consideration). In light of these pragmatic choices, it is fitting that the 2010 Product of the Year is a pair of pants and not some innovative or break-through product.

2010 was a tough year for our country's economy and a tough year for umpires. Cries for instant replay are heard weekly. During these tough times being consistent, durable, and trust worthy are characteristics that are admirable. These same characteristics are common in the 2010 UMPY Award winners.

Congratulations to all of the winners of the 2010 Umpire Merchandise Products of the Year and good luck in 2011.

Long Term Test Results

The summer season is winding down and school is starting soon. . . so now is a good time to do a long-term evaluation of gear. Today’s post reviews gear from last year’s U.M.P.Y Award winners.

Champro PRO-PLUS Gold Super-Xtreme Lightweight Face Mask

I began using the Champro magnesium face mask in May, 2009 and fell in love immediately. It is incredibly light (less than a pound!!!) and very comfortable after switching out the standard pads.

The Champro is also surprisingly durable. I have taken several shots to this mask from different angles and it did not shown a scratch, until. . .one particularly vicious foul ball during a college game hit the Champro mask and caused the upper eye bar to bend. I contacted Champro regarding its warranty. Champro is a solid company that is committed to customer service. I learned that Champro has a one year warranty from the date of purchase that covers product defects. However, foul balls are part of the game and bending from a serious force is expected. Given enough force any mask will bend (but hopefully not break).

Wilson Shock FX 2.0 Titanium Umpire Helmet (Product of the Year)

The Shock FX 2.0 was introduced in late 2009. It contains many safety features and is comfortable. However, I do not wear a helmet while working the plate, so I can’t speak first-hand regarding safety or durability.

Ump-Attire Ultimate Umpire Shirt

Jim Kirk sent me a navy blue Ump-Attire Ultimate Umpire Shirt to test and I have used it for two high school seasons. After several hundred washes it looks good as new and I intend to use it again next spring. As I expected during my initial testing, the Ultimate breathes well and is well constructed. I highly recommend this shirt.

Honig’s Poly Wool Umpire Pants

I wore the same Honig’s Poly Wool umpire plate pants and base pants to every college and high school game I officiated this year. These pants have seen 30 degree ice and 100+ degree sun. The Poly Wool pants do not seem to suffer from the same fading problems of previous Honig’s models.

Despite the label directions, I wash my Poly Wools in cold water after every wear. They are also dried on a permanent press cycle. I have been careful not to over-dry these pants, and there has been no sign of shrinking or unraveling.

Nutty Buddy

The Nutty Buddy is an essential piece of equipment.

Umpires are fond of telling the “took one to the jewels” stories. Hey, I think these stories are funny like the next guy, but you know what? I don’t have a story because I wear the Nutty Buddy. When I do get hit (it happens to us all), it is not serious – heck, it isn’t even uncomfortable! I hope Mark Littell makes a billion dollars from the Nutty Buddy because it is truly incredible.

I have worn the Nutty Buddy for two seasons. It has retained its shape and has not cracked or dented. It is not hot to wear and is comfortable even under extreme conditions. I put it on and forget about it.

Ump-Attire Ultimate Ball Bag

The Ump-Attire Ultimate Pro Style Umpire Ball Bag was introduced in 2009 and has been a big hit with umpires. Jim Kirk at Ump-Attire sent me one to review in March, 2009, and I purchased a second bag a little later to replace the Dry-Lo Ball Bag sold by Jim Evans Academy of Professional Umpiring.

I have been very impressed with the Ultimate Ball Bag which boasts double stitching and a nylon interior. I have washed these bags a number of times in cold water and low heat dry cycle. There is no fading, no unraveling or fraying, and the Ultimate Ball Bag looks as good as new a year and a half later.

Wilson DaviShins Leg Guards / Diamond DLG-LITE Featherweight Shin Guards

I stopped using the Wilson DaviShins after testing the Diamond Featherweight Shin Guards. The Diamonds guards weigh a mere 13.5 ounces! While these guards are light and comfortable, I have experienced two issues with these guards worth noting. First, during an 18U summer “prospects” tournament I took a foul ball directly on the knee cap. The impact hurt, but was not disabling. My opinion is that the result of this impact was a little more serious than I have experienced with other shin guards. This is likely a result of the loose-fit design around the knee.

The second issue also involves the loose-fit design at the knee. I typically wear long compression shorts that cover my knee cap. However, whenever I do not wear a covering on my knee, the shin guard rubs at my knee and is irritating in the 90+ degree heat.

Wilson West Vest Platinum Chest Protector

I have worn my Wilson Platinum chest protector for three years. This protector scored best in my “amateur scientist” drop test and I can attest to its protective qualities. It is built like a tank.

After three years and hundreds of games, the buckles are starting to rust. I spray my Platinum CP with Lysol after every use and it does not seem to retain odor.

Reebok Field Magistrate Plate Shoes

I get more questions about my Reebok plate shoes than any other equipment. I was a big fan of the New Balance MU450MK plate shoes until I tried the Reebok. This shoe is very comfortable and has proven very durable. It has not separated in any area from use. I have not experienced an impact that is noteworthy. Unlike the Reebok, a few years ago I took a foul ball off the toe of my New Balance MU450MK plate shoes and it hurt!

I use Scrubbing Bubbles and Armour All leather wipes before every game and my shoes look good. I have been wearing these shoes for over a year for every plate assignment and they are still going strong!

Bottom Line

All of the choices for last year’s U.M.P.Y Awards have proven very durable. There were a few noteworthy observations, but overall I have been very impressed with these products.

Best Umpire Equipment, Apparel and Training Aids of 2009

Midwest Ump is pleased to announce its selections for the first annual Umpire Merchandise Products of the Year (U.M.P.Y.) Awards. UMPY Awards are given annually for the best umpire equipment, apparel, and training aids, and is determined by both the reputation of the product in the umpire community, and by Midwest Ump testing and review.

This year the UMPY Awards are given in the following categories:

  • Traditional Mask
  • Helmet
  • Chest Protector
  • Leg Guards
  • Accessory
  • Shirt
  • Pants
  • Shoes
  • Training Aid
One overall winner as Product of the Year is also chosen. The following products have been chosen as the 2009 Umpire Merchandise Products of the Year:

Traditional Mask
Winner: Champro FM-58 PRO-PLUS Gold Super-Xtreme Lightweight Face Mask

The traditional mask category is dominated by feather-weight masks under 1.5 pounds. During 2009, Midwest Ump was able to field test different feather-weight masks made of steel, titanium, and magnesium from Wilson, Diamond, Champro, and All-Star. While all of the masks performed exceptionally well, one mask emerged as the clear choice.

The FM-58 PRO-PLUS Gold Super-Xtreme Lightweight Face Mask is made of a magnesium alloy with a high strength-to-weight ratio. The FM-58 weighs 15.5 ounces with the manufacturer's pads, harness, and without a throat guard - less than one pound! This was the lightest mask tested by Midwest Ump during 2009. In comparison, the highly regarded Diamond DFM-UMP Umpire Mask in Silver made of aircraft aluminum weighs 17 ounces.

Just as impressive as its weight is the FM-58's durability. Our test mask was game-used during high-school, semi-pro, and college baseball and softball games and has not dented or scratched. This mask looks good-as-new even after a long season of use.

The price as-tested for the FM-58 is $125.00 and is available from The Official Call (with free shipping if you mention the Midwest Ump review article when ordering). That price is cheaper than the Wilson Titanium mask (retailing around $200), but more expensive than the Diamond DFM-UMP Umpire Mask in Silver (retailing around $70).

Chest Protector
Winner: Wilson West Vest Platinum Chest Protector

Selecting a winner in this category came down to a choice between the Wilson West Vest Gold and the Wilson West Vest Platinum. Both chest protectors are outstanding, and each has a loyal following.

For some, the choice is easy. The Gold is available in smaller sizes for our more slender umpire brethren. Unfortunately for most of us, "slender" is still a few cases of light beer away. So until then, the Wilson West Vest Platinum chest protector is a better choice because it has better sternum protection, increased airflow between the chest protector and your undershirt (to aid the sweat evaporation process), and less padding. The Wilson West Vest Platinum is also very easy to clean.

The Wilson West Vest Platinum is widely available and cheaper than the Gold. Ump-Attire sells the Platinum for $144.99; and Lester's Upstate Sports sells the Platinum for $145.99.

Leg Guards
Winner: Gerry Davis DaviShins

The Gerry Davis DaviShins Leg Guards use a unique dual strap system to provide the most comfortable fit of any umpire leg guards. The two straps are strategically placed and avoids any irritation behind the knee. The knee cap is a recessed, no gap design that provides adequate coverage.

The DaviShins have a three velcro mounted ankle guards at the top and sides to provide customized protection depending on your plate shoes. The DaviShins are available from Gerry Davis for $79.90 in either 15” or 17.5” length.

Accessory
Winner (Tie): Ump-Attire Ultimate Ball Bag

An UMPY Award for a ball bag? Seriously?

Well, the lowly ball bag has finally hit the big time with The Ump-Attire Ultimate Ball Bag. Its quality construction and unique features make this ball bag deserving of recognition and praise.

The Ultimate Ball Bag features a zippered utility pocket in the back of the bag. The pocket is very roomy and convenient for storing an extra car key, cash, or other small valuables. There are three interior pockets: a pen pocket, a roomy brush pocket, and a lineup card pocket.

The Ump-Attire Ultimate Ball Bag is constructed from a durable twill fabric, uses double stitching for added durability, and has a nylon interior on the pant side to prevent the transfer of moisture. “Handmade by Amish craftsmen in Kentucky, U.S.A.,” the Ultimate Ball Bag is available exclusively from Ump-Attire in black, gray, or navy for $17.99. Congratulations to Jim Kirk and Ump-Attire for designing a terrific product!

Accessory
Winner (Tie): Nutty Buddy

We have to wonder how many times ex-MLB pitcher Mark Littell has stood in front of a pitching machine wearing nuthin' but a jock and a Nutty Buddy? He must be either crazy or extremely confident in his Nutty Buddy design!

It turns out he has good reason to be confident in the Nutty Buddy as its design is a huge leap forward in umpire safety. The story goes that Mark Littell was working with Kansas City Royals pitchers in spring training and discovered that many did not wear a protective cup because it was uncomfortable. Littell set out to design a more comfortable cup, and in the process, also developed a safer cup!

The design is anatomically correct and floats comfortably between an athletic supporter and compression shorts. The Nutty Buddy transfers the force of an impact to the pubic bone and away from your, er, "boys." Below is a video segment on the Nutty Buddy from the Fox Sports Science television show:

The Nutty Buddy is available from Nutty Buddy and prices start at $29.95. The boys will thank you.

Shirt
Winner: Ump-Attire Ultimate Umpire Shirt

The top rated shirt in the 2009 Midwest Ump Umpire Shirt Comparison Review article was the Ump-Attire Ultimate Umpire Shirt. The Umpire Shirt Comparison Review article compared shirts from Ump-Attire, Smitty Apparel, Gerry Davis, Honig’s, The Official’s Choice, Cliff Keen, and Dalco in seven categories: weight, breathability, construction, value, appearance, prick test, and wrinkle test. The Ump-Attire ultimate umpire Shirt placed in the top three of five of these categories.

The Ump-Attire Ultimate Umpire Shirt also performed very well over the 2009 season. Its durability is directly attributed to its quality construction. The Ump-Attire Ultimate Umpire Shirt is available through Ump-Attire for $32.99.

Pants
Winner: Honig's Poly Wool Pants

The October, 2009, Midwest Ump review of Honig's Poly Wool Pants called them the "Cadillac of Pants." The Poly Wools may look like Sunday-go-to-meetin' dress pants, but they are made for rigors of umpiring. These pants are made by umpires, for umpires: good-looking and tough as nails. Constructed from a heavyweight polyester and wool blend, the Poly Wools feature a reinforced knee, saddle stitching, and a "Snug-fit" waistband to keep your shirt tucked.

Honig's Poly Wool Pants are sold by Honig's for $73.95, and are only offered in charcoal grey.

Shoes
Winner: Reebok Field Magistrate Plate Shoes

It is really gratifying when a corporation as large as Reebok listens to the consumers. In June Midwest Ump reviewed the Reebok Field Magistrate Plate Shoe. The article concluded that "Once Reebok reigns in their self-promotion and eliminates the white logos, they can claim to have the ultimate umpire plate shoe."

Reebok has recently announced that an all black version of this shoe will be offered in 2010.

The Field Magistrate provides excellent ankle support and shin guards can fit comfortably over the tongue of the mid cut shoe (also available in low cut). This shoe is unquestionably more comfortable than the New Balance MU450, and the moisture wicking Play Dry lining is very soft. The Field Magistrate is also lighter than the New Balance MU450 and sports a turf sole for greater traction.

There is no debate; the Reebok Field Magistrate is the ultimate plate shoe on the market. Available from:

Training Aid
Winner: UmpireTeacher.com

The future of umpire training is on-line, and UmpireTeacher.com is the first to deliver with its on-line umpire school. UmpireTeacher.com uses video and discussion boards as training devices, much like on-line university classes - but without the pop quizzes!

Mike "Bugsy" Segal has assembled a highly respected team of instructors including former MLB umpire Vic Voltaggio and college umpire Frank Leparik, who actively participate and interact with "students" on the site. The student can discuss a unique situation or a rules issue, or view an umpire mechanics video and get feedback from one or more experienced umpires. The site's atmosphere is also casual and friendly.

The best thing about UmpireTeacher.com is that it is accessible 24-hours a day, 365 days a year, from anywhere in the world! Many umpires live in remote parts of the country (or the world!) and are unable to attend formal umpire training. For many, watching professional umpires on tv or amateur bloopers on YouTube is as close as it gets to umpire training. Now umpires everywhere, anytime can receive quality instruction. This is a major advancement in umpire training and UmpireTeacher.com and Mike Segal deserve to receive recognition and high praise for this innovation.

Membership on UmpireTeacher.com site starts at $9.99 per month, and offers a Free Ten Day Trial.

Helmet
Winner: Wilson Shock 2.0 FX Titanium Umpire Helmet
Winner: 2009 Umpire Merchandise Product of the Year

The last words in the Midwest Ump review of the Wilson Shock 2.0 FX Titanium Umpire Helmet says it all:

The Bottom Line
The simple fact that Wilson has made it a priority to improve umpire safety rates this product an absolute ten. While a hockey helmet will not protect from every kid of impact, a helmet offers side protection that a traditional mask lacks, and the Wilson Shock FX provides shock absorption that will help prevent concussions from impacts to the cage. The Shock FX offers a blend of comfort and protection that really is first rate.

Umpire safety and concussion prevention is the most important purpose of an umpire mask or helmet. Since Major League catcher Charlie O'Brien introduced the hockey style helmet to baseball in 1997, there have been very few changes from the original design.

Now Wilson has taken the next step in improving umpire safety. The Shock FX 2.0 uses six isolators to diffuse the energy from an impact to the cage. Wilson claims that the helmet reduces "impact forces to the head by up to 50% in a 60-inch direct impact drop test, when compared to a traditional helmet."

Wilson has also been very receptive to the feedback from umpires. Although the Shock FX was only recently released, the new and improved Shock FX 2.0 has now hit the shelves. Most important, this new model has strengthened the pistons and improved the vision through the cage (by moving the cage closer to the face).

For its safety improvements and attention to the needs of the umpire community, Wilson's Shock 2.0 FX Titanium Umpire Helmet is chosen as Midwest Ump's 2009 Umpire Merchandise Product of the Year.

The 2010 Wilson Shock FX 2.0 Titanium Umpire Helmet is currently offered by Ump-Attire for $219.95 (pre-ordering).

Final Word
2009 was an exciting year and saw major improvements in umpire equipment, apparel and training aids. The next year promises new and innovative products and Midwest Ump will continue to deliver the news and the reviews to the umpire community. Congratulations to all of the winners of the 2009 Umpire Merchandise Products of the Year.
