When Umpires were Real Men (but had false teeth)

I came across this picture on baseball-fever.com attributed to the year 1887. Even the casual baseball fan will notice there is no mound and the catcher is not wearing a mitt. However, you and I see the umpire, without mask, instinctively leaning towards the slot.

Enjoyed the photo Pete as I do seeing other vintage baseball references. So even over a hundred years ago, umpires knew it was best to get in the slot for a reduced chance of getting hit. You'll find another photo of where an umpire would have stood a few years earlier, in 1864. 1864 Vintage Baseball
